Today we have the pleasure of getting to know

Pamela Huntington

Patti – Hi Pamela, thanks so much for doing this interview with me.

First of all, share with me a little bit about what it’s like living in the Connecticut. Were you born there?

Pamela – Connecticut is like the filling an Oreo (double stuffed). We have New York and Boston as our chocolate cookies on either side! And the state itself has mountains, forests, valleys and the ocean!!

There has been a great return of wildlife, black bear, coyotes and bobcats are among the woods residents.

It is a state with so much history, you can see a house from the 1700’s, an ancient graveyard and lots of antique and junk shops to browse around on a Sunday afternoon.

And if that is not enough, I can be in Massachusetts or Vermont in twenty minutes. Rhode Island in an hour!

Patti – What is it like there this time of year? Are your winters harsh and do you get lots of snow? Do you snow ski? I have never tried but love to watch skiers coming down those mountains.

Pamela –I love winter here, especially when there is a lot of snow and I can get out to cross-country ski, walk or snow shoe. There is something magical about a fresh snow fall. It glistens in the sunshine or in the moonlight.

Patti - Tell me about your family. Are you a married women and if so how long have you been married? Do you have children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, or pets?

Pamela – My Family is small. I have a Son and a Daughter, both out of college and off on their own. I do have a brown lab, Riley who is my sweet pea and always makes me smile. I think he likes my artwork or at least he does a good job of pretending.

Patti – Share with us how you first became interested in creating digital art?

Pamela –I have been creating digital art for along time. I began years ago when I got my first desktop computer and someone suggested since I loved art that probably would enjoy a program by Corel. I can’t remember if it was Corel Paint or Draw but one of those and I just loved sitting and trying to figure out how to make images with the program. It was so much harder then. I could not really select an image or build layers but I still loved it. I think I scooped up the first Photoshop I could get my hands on and have been totally have been totally taken with the possibilities it offers. I also dabble in Illustrator and In Design but Photoshop is still my favorite. I know there are other programs but I have decided to stick with Photoshop and really learn the ins and outs.

Patti – You are so versatile in your creations. I admire that. How did you learn digital art? Did you teach yourself or did you take art courses or lessons?

Pamela –Thank you for the compliment about being versatile. I hope I am achieving that in my work. At first I learned Photoshop by trail and error. I have a huge shelf of books and I was working in a job at the time which mostly required me to be present in the store space! So I would sit for 8 hours and would pour over the books, learn a technique and then do it over and over until it became routine to me. Later I was able to take some higher level classes which I liked very much. There is so much to the Photoshop program and by adding some of these classes to my own information I could find even more of the nooks and crannies of the program!

Patti – I am amazed at your digital collage “Lulu Loved Her Butterfly”. Did you use digital painting to create this piece?

Pamela – I am delighted that you liked LuLu Love Her Butterfly. Yes, there is some digital painting along with filters, blended layers, filters and etc. I am an experimenter and some nights I sit down with a single image and try all sorts of layers, filters and blends until I finally produce an image I like and I throw plenty of them into the trash too!

Patti – What inspires you to create?

Pamela - I am very inspired by old images. They are probably my favorite thing to work with but I am also inspired by other artists. Colors and just stuff around the house and I have plenty of that!

Patti – What program do you use to create digital art? What are your favorite tools or filters?

Pamela - For me, mixed media and digital art sort of moved along together. I do a lot off assemblage and the layers in that type or work just dove-tailed with the digital art. Actually I often incorporate my digital art into my mixed media pieces but I bought a new book recently and wanted to try the reverse and make the mixed media art and use it with platform for digital piece. It is on my list of things to do!

My favorite program is Photoshop and I LOVE the blend mode. It is so simple but so intriguing in how you can change the entire look and feel of a piece with a simple blend.

Patti – Have you ever had any of your work published? If so tell me about it.

Pamela - Yes, some of my work has been published but the published work is mainly non-digital my hand made books and journals are in a few magazines. I did the digital branding for “Art-is-Yours” and they are still using the “Red Shoes” as their signature piece in magazines and print ads.

Patti – Do you have a favorite artist or someone that inspires your work?

Pamela –Honestly Patti, I am so inspired by nay people, you being one of them. I am such a visual person and I think really in pictures and not as much in words so writing this has been a stretch for me which is pretty funny because I graduated from college in Journalism. I love museums and adore costume exhibits but I do have a dark side and I love the oddities as well. I also find the turn of the phrase in a book will suddenly inspire an idea for a piece.

You know I teach at art retreats. I do teach Photoshop classes but also mixed media books and collage and the students are an amazing inspiration. I never finish a class without adding a little piece of new inspiration to my cabinet of ideas

Patti – Do you like to read and who is your favorite author?

Pamela - I am very eclectic in what I like to read. I love fiction and non-fiction but my favorite books are the ones with good visual imagery no big surprise I guess. Umberto Eco is a favorite and A.S. Byatt.

Patti – Many artists are inspired by music. Do you like music playing when you create? What is your favorite music?

Pamela - Again, I guess because I am such a collector of so many different things, I also collect music.

I love equally anything from Lady Gaga to Vivaldi. I guess for days in the studio I would probably go with my Renaissance Dance Music. I do like lively music and some Irish drinking songs figure in the mix somewhere. Someone at DW mentioned “Spotfy” which is a music source I really like too.

Patti – Do Are you a summer or a winter girl?

Pamela - I love, love, love winter. I love the cold crisp days. I love to snuggle under blankets with a nice big dog on top.

Patti - What is your strongest pet peeve?

Pamela - Really? You dare to ask. Honestly right now it is probably not having enough time to “do it all”. I wish I had a helper.

Patti – Lastly, Pamela, if you won $1000.00 to spend on anything you wanted what would that be?

Pamela - Wow! $1000.00. oooh, I would save it, at least until CS6 comes out!

I am finally back after a whole year. I have been compiling a book of my 100 challenges which I completed at the end of November - Hard work wasn't it? How did you all do?

I will be going back to monthly challenges again, and the first one will hopefully be on here tomorrow.
I will be using song titles as inspiration, so hopefully you will all enjoy it as well.

Interview with an Artist

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Barbara Moustafa.

Patti - Barbara, Hi

First of all, share with me a little bit about what it’s like living Beautiful Canada. Were you born there?

Barbara - I have lived in British Columbia Canada since 1975. I was born in Yorkshire, England in a place called Hull. The reason that I came here is because I am an R.N [retired now} and BC was looking for nurses. I only came for a year but stayed.
We have beautiful mountains and forests here and because we are on the Pacific ocean the weather is fairly mild. I live in a small place called Gibson's Landing which is only accessible by ferry, but in 40 minutes I can be in downtown Vancouver.

Patti – Does it snow where you live?

Barbara - The weather at this time of year is cool with sunny days and some morning frost. We do get snow but it usually stays mainly on the mountains.

Patti - Tell me about your family. Are you a married women and if so how long have you been married? Do you have children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, pets?

Barbara - I have been married to Gamal my husband for twenty eight years. We met in Egypt in 1981 when I was doing a degree in Archaeology. We have four sons Kareem 24yrs Rasheed 22yrs,Ameer 20yrs and Khaleel 19.
They have all moved out to Vancouver but they come home on a regular basis...I think we feed them too well! As for pets I have a Pomeranian called Buttons and an African Grey parrot called Mgongo who never stops talking!

Patti – Share with us how you first became interested in creating digital art?

Barbara – Originally I was like you Patti, I spent my time doing mixed media collages. I have a large collection of ephemera and used that to make stuff. Then I decided to get myself a laptop and it came with Photoshop so I started to play around with it. I began seeing beautiful digital artwork and I really wanted to learn how to do it myself.

Patti – You are so versatile in your creations. I admire that. How did you learn digital art? Did you teach yourself or did you take art courses or lessons?

Barbara – I must have spent hundreds of dollars on books with CD's that I could not make head or tail of! so in the end I had to teach myself by trial and error .I would go through all the buttons in Photo shop to see what they would do. My biggest problem was remembering to save what I had created. When I discovered layers I thought I had gone to heaven. I still use Photo shop differently to most people, I think I have found a lot of short cuts. The program I use the most is PS7

Patti – All of your work is so beautiful. I love the softness and colors you use. Can you share your favorite piece of art with us?

Barbara - My favorite piece of art is usually the last one I have created but there is one piece called Hibernate which always seems to make me look at it again when I see it .

Patti – What inspires you to create?

Barbara - My inspiration comes from all over the place but I do like creepy edgy stuff so Grimm's fairy tales have always been an inspiration. Sometimes music will inspire a piece of art { I like trance/house music} Mind you I can come up with some crazy ideas and I am never sure where they come from!

Patti – I started with mixed media. Have you done any mixed media work and have you incorporated it with your digital art?

Barbara – I do use my mixed media in my digital art, usually scanning documents and things and I have often used some of my collages as digital backgrounds.

Patti – What program do you use to create digital art? What are your favorite tools or filters?

Barbara - I use Photoshop 7 for all of my digital art I also have a Cintique tablet that I love as I can draw on the screen. My main painting program is Corel which came with my tablet. I also love plug-ins from http://redfield.com and http://flamingpear.com {the flood filters and Fractalius filters are my favorites.
But brushes are my addiction! I use them all the time some I make myself but there are so many available to download I can't get enough .I always use them on the clone setting which is another of my favorites.

Patti – Have you ever had any of your work published? If so tell me about it.

Barbara –

Patti – Do you have a personal blog you can share with us? Also, do you have a website or Etsy Shop or any other network?

Barbara – I have had my art published about three times in the Somerset Digital magazine one piece was a tutorial the others showcased my work. I have also done CD covers.
I have also had two shows at a local gallery which went very well and I have my art for sale.

Patti – What is your favorite color and what do you think it says about you?

Barbara – My favorite color is black I wear it all the time but usually with a splash of color some where. I'm not sure what is says about me though.

Patti – Do have a favorite artist, and if so who is it?

Barbara - My favorite digital artist is Michal Karcz http://www.michalkarcz.com/index.php his art is very edgy and inspirational. Traditional art favorite would be the Johannes Vermeer I love his 'girl with a pearl earring’

Patti – Have you ever visited the United States? If so where did you visit ? If not, where would you like to visit?

Barbara - I have been as far as Seattle in the US and that was a while ago. I have always wanted to go to the South West as I love the colors and the art.

Barbara - Patti - What is your strongest pet peeve?

Barbara – My strongest peeve would have to be against racism and inequality.

Patti – Lastly, Barbara, if you could go to anywhere in the world where would you want to go and why?

Barbara – have traveled all over the world but I never got to China I would love to go there. They have such an ancient culture and so much art. My eldest son lived in Beijing for a year, he plans to go back so I just might get there!

Patti - Kaylene, Hi

First of all, share with me a little bit about what it’s like living “Down Under”. Were you born there?

Kaylene –I was born in Australia in a small town in South Australia. Living "Down Under" is very much the same as living in the USA. I say this as I lived in San Diego for almost 20 years. Certain things are a little different in regards to shopping hours etc. But Australia is a wonderful place to live, especially in the country, where I live is on our largest river, the skies are incredibly blue and the air is clean. We notice the difference when we go to the closest large city.

Patti – Have Do you have lots of kangaroo there and do they come into the cities or stay mostly in the outback?

Kaylene –I had to laugh about the kangaroos, they are shy creatures and generally stay in their own habitat, although last Summer during a downpour a kangaroo came hopping down our street.

Patti – Does it snow where you live?

Kaylene -Does it snow, yes at the higher altitudes, but where we live the Summers are hot and the Winters are mild.

Patti - Tell me about your family. Are you a married women and if so how long have you been married? Do you have children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, pets?

Kaylene - I am married to Henk who is my third husband, we have been married 4 years, we have four children between us, and nine grandchildren, no great grandchildren although we do have grandchildren who could surprise us. We have a cat "Pusspuss" who rules the daily routine of when she wants you up and has a strange habit of rounding me up around 6pm to be in the kitchen. Adorable but bossy.

Patti – Share with us how you first became interested in creating digital art?

Kaylene –The first time I became interested in digital art was when I decided I wanted to design my own fabric for my art quilt projects and began to take on-line lessons from Rebecca Parsons. But I am now self taught, I find that the challenges that I participate in make me seek out ways to express myself. Also the workshops I have taken for my art quilts is invaluable for composition etc.

Patti – You are so versatile in your creations. I admire that. How did you learn digital art? Did you teach yourself or did you take art courses or lessons?

Kaylene –"Watermelon" was a challenge through DW and it has been a challenge to myself to actually paint digitally. "Like Mother Like Daughter" was fun, it is very hard to say which is a favorite as you put so much of yourself in your work. I do like photo manipulation so one that I did recently qualifies as a favorite. I did this for the DW calendar and is a model manipulated into an angel, I was pleased with her gown as it was a fur coat Liquefied and her skirt was cut and paste sections of cut glass.

Kaylene - The inspiration to create comes from my surroundings my knowledge of different cultural aspects and the challenges from the various groups at DW. Sometimes I will just create following a tutorial to see where it leads me. I have a beautiful garden so I will play around with flowers.

Patti – I started with mixed media at first. Have you ever incorporated your mixed media with your digital creations?

Kaylene – No I have not used mixed media, but I have printed my designs on fabric and used these in an art quilt. It would be fun to explore.

Patti – What program do you use to create digital art? What are your favorite tools or filters?

Kaylene - I use PSE 9 and have two fabulous filters---Topaz Labs and Filter Forge. My favorite filters are the Black and White from Topaz and any filter that gives me the watercolor or oil painting look. My favorite tool? Probably "quick selection". I also use Artrage and Corel Essential Painter.

Patti – Have you ever had any of your work published? If so tell me about it.

Kaylene –I just recently had an exhibition of my work, so this is the closest I have got to being published.

Patti – Do you have a blog you can share with us? Also, do you have a website on Etsy Shop or any other network?

Patti – What is your favorite color and what do you think it says about you?

Kaylene –If I take a peek in my wardrobe I would have to say blue, but I also like greens. What does it say\?, I am not sure as I am a private person who expresses herself in art.

Patti – Do you like to read and who is your favorite author?

Kaylene - What do I like to read? My reading habits have been bad lately, I like drama, historical novels, but I must say "Dune" is an all time favorite. I really do not have a favorite author.

Patti – What is your favorite holiday and why?

Kaylene – My favorite holiday was taken last year when Henk and I spent four weeks with his cousin in Germany and he was able to visit his relatives that he had not seen since he was 12. Also we went back to his home town of Zwolle in Netherlands.

Patti – If you could come to America, what part would you want to visit most?

Kaylene - If I could come to America, I would visit northern California and the coast of Oregon.

Patti - What is your strongest pet peeve?

Kaylene – My strongest peeve is cultural prejudice.

Patti – Lastly, Kaylene, if you could go to anywhere in the world where would you want to go and why?

Kaylene – If I could go anywhere in the world, that is such a broad question. Everywhere, no, I think I would like to go to Spain and Portugal, the culture attracts me and also the vivid colors.

Interview with an Artist

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know MoMeMa.

Patti - MoMeMa, Hi
First of all, share with me a little bit about what it’s like living in Orlando. Is this your home town? If not where did you grow up?

MoMeMa –I was born in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico where I came interested in Fashion Design way before I graduate from HS. I received a scholarship and went to study in Ft. Lauredale, FL. Move to Orlando, FL and I have been living here on and off for over twenty three years in the USA. Living in Orlando, FL has provided me with many jobs opportunities in my art field.

The city of Orlando has beautiful weather year round. If a person is looking to get away from the brutal winters of the north, Orlando is the perfect city for them. The beaches outside the Orlando area are beautiful and can be enjoyed for much of the year. People who love boating find Orlando to be the perfect place to live. And how can anybody forget Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens, that are our top job companies. I worked as a dancer for Disney World for over three years (my first job) I will never forget the many great experiences that I had while working for them.

I'm never bored when it comes to doing something over the week or weekends. The Orlando community supports a great deal of local artists, galleries, performing arts and local shows, there is always something going on in Downtown Orlando. The city is clean and I love the surrounding landscapes, especially in springtime.

Orlando is the perfect city for those that want to enjoy a place with beautiful weather and bright economic future.

Patti – Have you ever encountered any gators?

MoMeMa -Yes, living anywhere in the state of Florida you will somewhere or somehow will encounter yourself with those ugly and scary creatures. I live like about 15 minutes from “Gatorland” a gator farm park, I only been there maybe five times. I'm not very fond of them; I try to stay away from water canals, ponds and springs. They give me the chills just to think about them!

Patti - Tell me about your family. Are you a married women and if so how long have you been married? Where did you meet your husband? Do you have children, grandchildren, great grandchildren? How many and what are their ages and names?

MoMeMa -I'm a divorce, single mother of one. Her name is Michelle Saraih and she is 13 yrs old, she loves to paint, plays the violin and photography.

Patti – Share with us how you first became interested in creating digital art?

MoMeMa –I came interested in Digital Arts when I began my own business in making and designing my own line of Spa products and I needed to prepare labels, business cards and posters. I had no special education in it, just learn as you go!

Patti – With the beautiful art you create, you always have a poem or a story. I admire that. I am not a very good writer. What inspires you to write, does it come before after or during your creating?

MoMeMa –Thank you Patti, I enjoy reading poetry and inspiring stories. I like to write what I feel or what I see around me, everything is an inspiration. Also I use other favorite author’s literature to inspire me when creating my artworks whether is Digital, Mixed Media or Collages. Most of the time my inspirations come from words, titles or a message I want to deliver. I write it down in my journal, get images and design the composition. Sometimes an image will speak for itself!

Patti – Your technique with color is amazing. How did you learn to do that? Did you teach yourself or did you take any art courses?

MoMeMa –I love bright colors, jewel colors and black and white images. I have a background in Arts so, this has helped me on how to use a color palette that I like on my artworks. I think, sometimes school is only a tool to help you with the basics but, in the long term the ending result is all on you. Whatever color wakes up all your senses.

Patti – Does that technique have a name?

MoMeMa -No special name, just what it comes to my mind and soul.

Patti – Can you share your favorite piece of art with us?

Patti – What inspires you to create?

MoMeMa – For me inspiration comes from the people that surrounds me, colors of nature, patterns of nature, living things, music, feelings, experiences, social events, chaos, religion, politics, multicultural topics, and many others.

Patti – I started with mixed media at first. Have you ever incorporated your mixed media with your digital creations?

MoMeMa –I had known artists that are doing this type of Mixed/Digital Arts. I found it very interesting and very costly when you have a big piece that you have to print out. The only thing I have done is a recent Abstract Portrait that I started on paper, took a picture and altered with digital. I would love to do some more of this technique on small scale.

Patti – What program do you use to create digital art? Do you have a favorite tool or filter?

MoMeMa -I use; PS7, Photo Explosion and Gimp. I like all of them but my favorite is the Scissor Select, Layer Mask and the Blur.

Patti – Have you ever had any of your work published? If so tell me about it.

Patti – What is your favorite color and what do you think it says about you?

MoMeMa –My favorite color is Royal blue or Indigo for it's richness, it goes well with green, light brown, tan, beige, red, orange, contrast of blue is yellow, white and metallic silver. It's calming, superior and is elegant. I love to wear Royal blue.

Patti – Do you like to cook? Can you remember what you the first dish you prepared on your own was and how did it turn out?

MoMeMa -Yes, I do remember but, it's kind of embarrassing for me to share it, it happen when I was in college, can you imaging!. I was well known for burning things ha,ha,ha. Now I can cook very well when I'm in the mood. I enjoy making Pastas and Latin food.

Patti – Have you ever been roller skating?

MoMeMa –I love roller skating, I use to go to our local skate ring every weekend with my girlfriends back in HS and now that I have a 13 yrs old I put on those skates and I make a fool of myself in front of my daughter's friends. I still have it! I think!! ha, ha, ha.

Patti – I have heard that some artists have to have music when they create. When you create do you listen to music?

MoMeMa -I'm one of them; I love to listen to Journey, Gipsy Kings, Celine Dion, Multicultural Instrumental, U2, any up beat music.

Patti - What is your strongest pet peeve?

MoMeMa –I think; uncivilized people and disorganized.

Patti – Lastly MoMeMa, if you could go to anywhere in the world where would you want to go and why?

MoMeMa –I always dream to visit Bora Bora located in the French Polynesia in the South Pacific because of it's majestic beauty and it's peaceful landscapes.

Interview with an Artist

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Jane Fiala.

Patti - Jane, Hi

First of all, share with me a little bit about what it’s like in Minneapolis. Is this your home town? If not where did you grow up?

Jane –Hi Patti, I’m originally from Jacksonville, Florida but moved to Minneapolis in 1974 when I married a man from Minnesota (divorced now) who was serving in the Navy stationed in Jacksonville Beach-Mayport.

Hmmmm…What it’s like in Minneapolis? Well, it can be trying living here. The winters can be brutal, but it’s all in what you get used to. It took many years for me to acclimate to the winters here, but this is my home and has been for many years so I take the good with the bad. My current husband (Mark) and I take vacations in Florida in the winter months, so I get the best of both worlds. Besides, this is where two of our children and four of our grandchildren live so I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. We also have a son that lives in Washington DC with his wife, and I try to get out there at least once a year.

Patti – Are you a city or a country girl at heart?

Jane –I’m definitely a city girl, although Mark and I enjoy going “up north” once or twice per year in the summer months to go boating and fishing. We stay at a nice resort because I’m not one of those who like to “ruff” it. I love, love, love boating, however, and take my camera along to take as many pics as possible that I use in my landscape paintings.

Patti – With the beautiful art you do of dogs, are these your pets? Tell me about them.

Jane –Callie is our pup. Winston is my son’s pup and Prima is my daughter’s pup. The other animal paintings are from people who send me images of pets and allow me to paint them and post them. I’ve recently opened an account at Fine Art America where I post my paintings of pets with the proceeds from the sale of prints and greeting cards to benefit animal rescue organizations. I’m always looking for jpg’s of people’s pets to paint, and in return I always send a digital copy back to the owner of the pet as a thank you for allowing me to use the image. If you would like to have your pet painted—cats, birds, any pet really—and you have a nice digital jpg, send it to me along with a description of what you love about your pet. I’d love to paint your pet’s portrait and it might just bring in some funds for a worthy cause.

Jane – Mark and I have been married for 12 years. We have an interesting story about how we met, but to make a long story short, I answered his ad. Between us we have three children. Niko, 32; Dena, 28; and Eric is also 28. We have 4 grandchildren, Myah, 3; Mariana, 1; Nathan, 2; and Anna is 6 weeks old. Eric and his wife do not have any children, yet. We are a blended family, our children were in their teens when we met, and we have been blessed with having an easy time of it. We all got along splendidly and our children have all become successful emotionally and spiritually. We are very lucky.

Patti – Share with us how you first became interested in creating digital art?

Jane – To tell the truth, I’m not sure. I actually started working with Photoshop elements and digital manipulation to print cards to sell along with my glass work and jewelry. Then it sort of evolved from there. I decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS3 but became frustrated that I couldn’t paint with a mouse. So I asked for and received a Wacom tablet for Christmas. I then decided to look at Corel Painter as an additional method to paint with. It was at this time that I knew I’d found the method and medium I wanted to pursue and the kind of art I wanted to produce.

Patti – Your technique with photos is amazing. How did you learn to do that? Did you teach yourself or did you take any art courses?

Jane – I started doing research on digitally painting portraits and ran across Marilyn Sholin’s book, “The Art of Digital Photo Painting”. I also purchased CD’s and DVD’s from artists like Carrie Woeck, Brad Buttrey, Scott Deardorff, and Fay Sirkus, and attended two workshops, one from Marilyn Sholin and one from Darrell Chitty. As I wasn’t a professional photographer, which is where most of these artists were coming from, I had to learn how to paint from photo’s that were less than stellar. But, I actually became good at it, and could produce a pretty good painting from a really bad photo—including those that come from camera phones. I eventually purchased a decent beginner DSLR so that I would have the ability to take continuous photos of fast moving children—my grandchildren and nieces—which has made a huge difference. I love the spontaneity that comes from this kind of shooting. I like that most of the images that I paint from are not posed.

But, basically, I have to say that I have studied hard and painted a lot even when I didn’t like the outcome. It took a long time to develop my own voice in my paintings—to experiment with different brushes, different programs, combinations of this and that until I’m satisfied.

Patti – Can you share your favorite piece of art with us?

Jane - I love painting my grandkids, but I’d have to say my favorite is Mari and Her Thumb. It just all came together in this painting.

Patti – What inspires you to create?

Jane – I’ve always been a glass is half empty kind of person. This is mostly a biological issue and I have to purposely work to keep my head thinking positively. I choose to paint pretty because it has a positive effect on me. My grandchildren also inspire me to create. I’m not sure why, but I just have a need to create…it’s just in me. Don’t know why, it just is.

Patti – I started with mixed media at first. Have you created mixed media and do you incorporate your digital creations?

Jane –I actually started making art after I hurt my back 15 years ago and couldn’t play golf anymore. It was then that I started painting. I would take old furniture and paint it for children and sell it at art shows and then later in my shop. From there I painted glass stemware, created jewelry using beads and metals, and then became a fused glass artist. It’s only been in the last year and a half that I’ve painted digitally. I have worked in mixed media but I’ve not put the two together.

Patti – What program do you use to create digital art? Do you have a favorite tool or filter?

Jane – I use Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Corel Painter. I go back and forth between the two throughout my painting process. I love the dodge tool and the sharpening filters. I also like the Topaz filters.

Patti – Have you ever had any of your work published? If so tell me about it.

Jane – Unfortunately I’ve not been published.

Patti – Do you have a blog you can share with us? Also, do you have a shop on Etsy or any other network?

Jane – My blog is www.jlfiala.blogspot.com. I’ve recently opened an account on Fine Art America and I’ve been putting my work on flickr for quite a while. I used to have an Etsy Shop for my jewelry and glass, but I have since closed those to concentrate on my digital painting. I’m still in the process of trying to figure out how to market myself. I have just completed my second commissioned piece, however.

Patti – What is your favorite color and what do you think it says about you?

Jane – I don’t have a favorite color. But, I do like bright saturated color—blues, greens, yellows—I love them all! I couldn’t tell you what it says about me except…I like color!!!

Patti – Do you like to cook? What is your favorite dish and can you share your recipe?

Jane – I actually don’t like to cook. I know how to cook and I do for special occasions, but to tell the truth, I’d rather be doing something else. Like painting!

Patti – On a cold winter night would you rather relax with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine?

Jane – I don’t drink anymore, so definitely the hot chocolate…soft snuggly slippers, warm sweats and soft blankets…until I have a hot flash!

Patti – Would you rather watch a good movie or read a good book?

Jane – I enjoy both. I spend the first hour of every morning reading. I’m reading “Maine” by Courtney Sullivan right now. I also like to watch good movies, usually on weekends during the winters.

Patti - What is your strongest pet peeve?

Jane – Hmmmmm…people who are oblivious to how their actions affect others.

Patti – Lastly Jane, if you could go to anywhere in the world where would you want to go and why?

Jane – I’ve never been to Europe and want very much to do a lot of traveling abroad in the future. I especially want to go to Italy and the Greek Isles with my husband and my camera and take lots of pictures and bring my laptop and Wacom tablet and paint to my hearts’ content.

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Bernice Wagnitz

Patti - Bernice, Hi

First of all share with me a little bit about what it is like in Clawson, Michigan?

Bernice – I live in a very small city, about a square mile. I love that everything is close by and we have won the award for the amount of trees in a city. We have a volunteer firehouse and crime is almost non-existent.

Patti - Do you have pets? Tell me about them.

Bernice - I have a 12 year old Husky/Border collie. She came to me as a run away. She is the smartest dog I’ve ever had and is as independent as a cat. She has beautiful blue eyes and is the love in my life.

Patti – When did you first become interested in creating digital art?

Bernice – It was about a couple of years ago. I was just poking around and liked what I saw. I was hooked and made a lot of color merge and Pure Energy prints. I never was able to take a class to learn all the newer photo programs. I hope to someday but for now, I’m enjoying what I’m creating.

Patti – I know that when I look back at my first piece of art I have to laugh. It is amazing to see how far I have advanced with my creating over the years. Have you ever done this?

Bernice- - Sure thing Patti, I'm almost embarrassed when I see some of my really early work.

I'm a true believer in practice makes better art.

Patti - Can you share your favorite piece of art with us?

Patti - What inspires your work Bernice?

Bernice –Color, movement, emotions and music

Patti – Do you also create mixed media art, and do you incorporate your digital art?

Bernice –I’ve done mixed media art and enjoy it very much but I haven’t mixed it with my digital work, yet.

Patti – I have seen your talent in other creations like dolls. Are you still creating dolls?

Bernice –I have one doll finished and one almost done. They are the leaf dolls, one is Summer the other Autumn.

Patti – What program do you use to create digital art? Your work is so unique and I know you do Color Merge. I can honestly say I have not seen any other artist do what you do. Your style is unique. Do you have a favorite tool or filter?

Bernice –I use Adobe Photo Deluxe 2.0. I don’t have any filters or favorite tools. I just keep messing around with a picture till it pops for me, the hues, contrast, and color mix has to be just right.

Patti – Are you a Mac or a PC girl?

Bernice –PC all the way.

Patti – Have you ever had any of your work published? If so tell me about it.

Bernice –No, I have never been published. It really never has been a goal of mine. I do my art to please me and love when others love my art too.

Patti – Do you have a blog you can share with us? Also do you have a shop online?

Patti – What is your favorite color and what do you think it says about you?

Bernice –I’ve had many favorite colors throughout the years, for now it’s lilac, light to med and green, more of a blue green than yellow green.,

Patti – What is your favorite food?

Bernice –Fried eggplant but I can’t have it anymore. Does KFC count?

Patti – Do you like to cook and do you have a favorite recipe you can share with us?

Bernice –I cook because I have to. Surprisingly I’m an excellent cook and baker but I prefer to follow recipes to the letter and love when someone cooks for me.

Patti – Do you like to go bare foot?

Bernice –My Mother would never allow us to go bare foot, she said our feet would get flat and wide. Of course we did as she asked. I adore to run my feet through some soft green grass. My shoes are the first thing that comes off when I come home.

Patti - What is your strongest pet peeve?

Bernice –People who lie, make promises and break them, and people that don’t know that we are all the same.

Patti – Lastly Bernice, if you could go to anywhere in the world where would you want to go and why?

Bernice –I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii and Greece.

Hello fellow artists

Our 100 Themes family is growing and growing - I am so glad that our blog is such a success. I know that Kimmie and I wondered if we were doing the right thing by changing it, but you have all proved that we were.

I would like to congratulate you all on the high standard and creativity of the work that is being produced for the themes - you are all amazing!!!! It is so great to see the journey that some of you are making, from beginner to experienced, and it makes it all worth while.

I have selected one of my recent favourites to show you. It is called Faith by Grannie Annie.

I love the images selected, and how the model is stepping out into space, but there is a hand ( I like to think the hand of God) to catch her as she falls. Just like life. A great concept, and a fabulous piece of art, with a strong message. I hope you agree with me.

100 Themes Challenge

We got this idea from http://brandrificus.deviantart.com/ and thought it would be a great challenge for this blog, and a great New Years Resolution/goal for everyone. I'd encourage everyone to challenge themselves with this wonderful thought builder!

The rules are:

New art for every theme. No two themes in one piece of artwork.
You have a year time limit.
You can just dip in as and when you feel like it, in any order, so it will be easy to fit in around your other commitments.
Set up a separate folder for your work
When a new work is completed, leave a message on the blog, with a link to said work in your folder, so that we can all access and admire it.
Make sure everything is clearly and accurately credited.
The most important rule of all - Have Fun!

At the end of the year, you could make a book of your art – make 2011 the year of your best Art!

If you are interested in this idea, leave me a note in the comments, so that we can see how many people are interested. Of course people can join at any time, and just catch up when they can. The 100 Themes are:::: He He He – you will have to wait and see, but they are brilliant, flexible, and something that everyone can enjoy, no-matter the level of experience.

This weekend, June 26th, is the 3rd Annual Feasibly of Madness" hosted by
A Fanciful Twist. I hope you join us by creating a wonderful wonderland piece
of art using the images provided. Anything goes as long as you use 3 or 4
of the images provided.

I would like to thank Vanessa Valencia for hosting the "Madd Tea Party 2010". I have always wanted to attend one of her parties, but never had time to prepare. Hopefully this will help those who would like to attend as well. You still have time to stop by her blog and be added to her list of partiers.
