Take a Word - Birdlife

These are North American Whooping Cranes.   They have an interesting story.  In the early 1980's they were nearly extinct, with only 15 birds remaining.  Wildlife conservationists devised a most unusual project to introduce a new migrating population of the endangered species from Wisconsin to safe nesting grounds in Florida.  The chicks were taught to fly, led by a surrogate parent,-- an ultralight plane, and they flew successfully to their new nesting grounds.   The project has been successful, and  there have since been 10 successful flights and the population has grown to 570.   If you are interested in reading about this fascinating project, see here    http://www.whoopingcrane.com/WCCA_report/?p=281
